Can I connect a game console or TV to the residential network?

Game consoles may be connected to the campus network. However, Information Technology is not able to support game consoles and cannot guarantee that any particular game can be played due to firewall, quality of service, or traffic priority rules that may be in place on the network.

There are two ways to connect a game console to the campus network. One uses an internet browser on the game console, and the other lets you register your device manually using the MAC address.

Using the Console's Browser:

1.  Make the Network Connection

You may connect your device to either the wired or wireless network (the wired network will provide a faster and more reliable connection).  Please choose the "UIndy" network for a wireless connection.

2.  Register Your Game Console on the Network (Web Browser)

If your game console comes with a web browser (e.g. XBox 360), configure the game console to use DHCP, and then open your web browser.

  1. The browser will bring up the registration page for the University:
Join UIndy Network - select an authentication method
  2. Choose the Username/password login option.
  3. Read the Network & Systems Usage Policy. Scroll to the bottom of the page and check the "I accept the terms" box to indicate your agreement to behave in accordance with the policy.
Join UIndy - network and systems usage policy
  4. Enter your UIndy Username and PasswordIf you have not activated your UIndy account yet, please follow these instructions for doing so: How do I activate my UIndy username and e-mail account?
Join UIndy network - authenticate with your UIndy username and password
  5. Click Submit.
  6. A  new screen will pop up showing "Role default has been assigned to your device". Your game console should now be registered and able to use the campus network.

Manually Registering Your Console

If your game console does not come with a web browser, you will need to obtain the Ethernet MAC address of your device. The MAC address is an identification number in the machine that appears as letters and numbers in the format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx OR xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx.

To learn how to find the MAC address for your game console:

  1. Open any web browser on a computer that has already been registered.
  2. Navigate to Google.com and search for "how to find MAC address for [type of console]". Ex: "how to find MAC address for XBox One"
  3. Copy down the full MAC address
How to register your device when you have the MAC address:
  1. Click on the following link or enter it into the address bar: https://mydevices.uindy.edu/device-registration
  2. You will see the registration login page:
Join UIndy Network - Login Page
  3. Read the Network & Systems Usage Policy. Check the "I accept the terms" box to indicate your agreement to behave in accordance with the policy.
  4. Enter your UIndy Username and PasswordIf you have not activated your UIndy account yet, please follow these instructions for doing so: How do I activate my UIndy username and e-mail account?
  5. Click Login.
  6. Enter your game console's MAC address and click the Register button.
Register device manually on the UIndy network; enter MAC address
  7. Your game console should be able to access the UIndy network now. Click the Logout link.
